Book Editing

Many more people start writing a book than finish it!

Writing a book is no small undertaking. So, wherever you are on your journey, well done for making it this far! If you’re looking for an editor, chances are you’ve invested a great deal of time, thought and energy into your book already.

I’d love to help you take it to the next level. Whether you’re looking to share your expertise or tell a story, let’s work together to make your manuscript the very best it can be.

How can I help you?

  • Proofreading – a fairly light and quick check-through of your manuscript just prior to it being published. The main purpose of this final check is to ensure your work is not going out into the public domain with any errors or typos. It involves correcting things like spelling, grammar, punctuation and capitalisation.
  • Copy editing – constitutes much more in-depth work. It’s about making sure your writing is not only 100% correct but also clear, coherent, consistent, and communicating exactly what you intended.
  • Constructive feedback – an indispensable part of the editing process, which can be guided by you. You can tell me what your own concerns are with the writing, and/or I can tell you what strikes me as I read through the material. In a nutshell, if you’re targeting your book at other humans, you’ll want to know how your words and ideas land with another human. Is it clear? Is it engaging? Is it accessible? Is it relatable? Is it too revealing? Is it too dry? I can answer your specific questions and address any concerns.

What’s the process and how do I charge?

That all depends on what stage you’re at with your book and how much input you want from me.

EARLY STAGES?

Authors usually send me chapters as they finish their first or second drafts, for my initial feedback and first edit. I sometimes work with authors over several months or longer, and invoice each month for the hours I’ve spent on their book segments. There is also an optional monthly check-in by Zoom, which helps authors stay on track with their writing and ask specific questions as they arise.

FINAL STAGES?

Other authors wait until they’ve finished their writing and received initial feedback from loved ones or colleagues. I then review a sample, and quote them a fixed fee for the whole job.

JOANNE BROWN, Botanical Photographer ~ October 2026

Joanne Brown

As a first-time writer, I was rather nervous about releasing my creation on to someone to copy edit. Tracy was super helpful at laying out the scope of her editing along with costings, and kept me updated on when the work would be finished. She also offered a follow-up video call to go over some finer details which I found really helpful.

Since reviewing Tracy’s edits and guidance, I have been working on my writing again and feeling positive about my book. Her feedback has inspired me to keep going, and I am thankful for her kindness, encouragement – and, of course, her editing skills.

CLAIRE MARSHALL, Momentum Specialist ~ August 2026

Tracy was an essential addition and ideal complement to my publishing team. I could see from the get-go that she would be thorough, precise and accurate, bringing a wealth of experience to the editing and proofing process. She added a lot of value – raising useful and important points in her comments and asking questions throughout to check my meaning and intentions. I was very happy and reassured by Tracy’s editing.

I also appreciated her opinion on various things such as the presentation of my book’s title and subtitle, and other visual elements. Tracy was also communicative throughout the process, managed time well and was a pleasure to work with. I can 100% recommend Tracy for your book project.

SAM JAYASURIYA, Leadership Energy Coach ~ July 2026

Tracy is such a wonderful person to have in your book-writing team. As a copy editor, she is very professional, able to meet tight timelines, and works with great skill and attention to detail. But the reason I keep choosing to work with Tracy, rather than using AI as so many do these days, is the human qualities she brings to my work. She is kind and fun to work with, so a great support in my book-writing process. She’s also got an ideal balance between being a cheerleader and a critic. Having an objective outside eye is so essential to the writer, but nobody wants to be deflated. Tracy shares her viewpoint with sensitivity.

Our monthly check-in sessions have also been invaluable. As writers, we often get lost in our guts and ruminate endlessly about our writing. Talking things through on a video call, seeing another person’s authentic responses, like a wrinkled forehead or lit-up smile, is super helpful in gauging the impact of my work. Overall, she helps me move from stuckness to flow, from chaos to coherence and clarity, making sure that what I’ve written makes sense and resonates with my readers. Writing a book doesn’t have to be a lonely job, and I wholeheartedly recommend Tracy as both an editor and a very encouraging companion on that journey.

COLIN MILLAR, Crime Writer ~ May 2020

I started working with Tracy copy-editing my novel (Foreign Bodies – due out soon, plug, plug!) in February this year. She was recommended to me through the Athena Network. I have found Tracy to be very professional, accurate and thorough in her work. She is also very easy to get along with which makes the whole process much less painful! As with many creatives I can be a touch (ahem) precious about my work but Tracy’s easy manner and understanding of what I want to achieve has meant those occasions rarely, if ever, arise. She delivers when she says she will and has adapted to my changing requirements seamlessly. All in all, I would heartily recommend Tracy for any copy-editing work you may have, from website and blog copy, sales material and even – if you have the inclination – books, both fiction and non-fiction. All this despite Tracy once calling me punctuationally challenged!

ROSEMARY WISEMAN, Performance Coach ~ July 2018

Tracy kindly demonstrated her great skill in proofreading when she zoomed in on the first few chapters of my book with her ‘eagle eyes’. I was impressed with the detail she observed and her comments and suggestions were thought-provoking and helpful. I also appreciated her attention to the consistency of the text and ensuring it always made sense. Tracy truly seeks to understand what she is reading and clearly puts her whole self into her work. It is a job done with love and attention to the script in its widest sense. Her general advice for the whole book was very valuable and led to an interesting conversation on levels of perfection and letting go – both in literature and in life!
